On Sunday November 2nd, Bửu Kim Tự Dragon and Lion Dance Association celebrated its 15th Anniversary at Maji Palace Restaurant in Milpitas.
Founder and leader Thầy Sunny Nguyễn led the 30-member team, welcoming over 200 guests to witness the colorful ceremonies of honoring "Quan Công", the God of Justice, Khai Quang Điểm Nhãn (eye-dotting of new Lân), demonstration of skills, recognizing members and performers, and treating guests with a delicious multi-course dinner in the evening.
The Lion Dance team's journey began when Thầy Sunny brought his Lion-dancing art from Rạch Giá, South Vietnam, where he learned from his uncle, a venerated monk at Bửu Kim temple. Coming to the U.S. with his brother Tuấn, he missed his homeland very much and started teaching kids Lion dancing. After he married his wife, Josie, and had two children, Janette and Alex, they introduced Lion dancing to the Ra Khơi scouting troop.
Finally, they founded their own independent organization, named after the revered Bửu Kim Tự (BKT) temple, and drew many young people into it. The troupe operates very much like a scout troop, with strict discipline, regular outings, and annual camping trips. They trained at thầy Sunny's home and Ley Va Middle School and performed dozens of events each year.
BKT became a well-recognized name in San Jose due to its traditional style, authentic art, and close attention to cultural details. Each performance brings both deep energy and entertainment to the watchers. Chinese businesses like BKT for their astute adherence to cultural requirements that bring joy and prosperity.
BKT became a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and spends all funds collected on its youth members. Thầy Sunny and Josie spend their own money to buy new Lion heads and also donate to charities in Vietnam. They help nearly all team members find jobs after high school, and some members now start their own families.
The extravagant anniversary was not for publicity but to celebrate the achievements of the core team members. They are:
David Nguyễn, Matthey Du, Ace Nguyễn, Alex Nguyễn, Randy Dinh, Huy Nguyễn, Jonathan Nguyễn, Jennifer Nguyễn, Steven Wang, Tonny Nguyễn, Kevin Neri, Andy Danh Ngô, Mai Nguyễn, Trí Nguyễn, Andrew Ly, Vivi Leong, Jason Huỳnh, Monica Bautista, Savanah Trần, Ethan Huỳnh, Ryan Yen, Minh Lê, Lesly Nguyễn, Nathan Nguyễn, Randy Phan, and many more.
Congratulations to BKT for being a shining example of dedication, service, and citizenship for our community. We wish you many more years of success and joy!
